European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
