Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to message these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant health risks”.
